Shutter Styles

There are two basic styles when it comes to exterior house shutters. There are the narrow paneled shutters sporting small louvers. These are basically the more standerd shutters which are used on homes.  There are also the wider louvered shutters that are known as plantation type shutters.  Be sure to check out both styles before making a decision.

Shutter Finish

If you buy wooden shutters, you will have to have the shutters either stained or painted.  Staining is the technique of brushing on a translucent color and then wiping it off.  You are able to see the grains of the wood after you stain it. Painting gives the shutters an opaque finish. As with everything else, the best finish is decided by personal taste.  You must make sure that they are finished with a sealer, however, whether they are painted or stained. 

If the house shutters are vinyl, they do not need to be painted and cannot be stained.  Vinyl shutters can be immediately installed and are maintenance free.

Unit Sizes

The size of your house shutters should be in proportion to the size of your windows.  Even if they will most likely remain open, the shutters should still appear as though they are able to swing closed and cover the complete window opening. This means that the shutters need to be big enough to block the complete window.  A measurement should be taken of your window so the shutters will be proportionate.  Also be aware that you can use double tiered or single tiered shutters, both of which make a difference. 

Price

Shop the prices of shutter and siding companies in your town as well as those online.  You could get custom made shutters from a carpenter, and should contact any in your area that build shutters. That might not be your cheapest purchase, though. You can usually find house shutters at a better price online than at a home improvement center because you should not have to offset the cost of sales commissions or overhead.  Getting shutters from the producer can be more affordable.  Just remember to measure carefully and ask the customer service center questions before purchasing the shutters.
