Add the Touch of Wood to Your Outside

Traditional wooden shutters were the standard for many centuries.  These Days, however, vinyl and other styles of shutters are often used instead of traditional wood house shutters.  The reason why wooden shutters are quickly becoming a thing of the past is that they need to be maintained. Most people today are looking for a way to eliminate maintenance around the house.  Wooden shutters require repainting or re-staining about every other year, even if they are protected from the weather. There are other ways.

Exterior house shutters are primarily used for asthetic purposes and are never actually used, unlike in centuries past when shutters were developed.  Shutters used to keep out rain and wind a long time ago, before double paned glass.  In these modern times, shutters are rarely closed, but do add glamour and décor to any home.

As we slowly replace our wooden shutters, we can purchase and enjoy the following types of shutters:

Vinyl Shutters

Just like vinly exterior siding, vinyl house shutters require no regular repairs and will not rot or fall apart. The only drawback with vinyl shutters as opposed to wood is that they can be marked if anything is tossed at the windows. The problem is, they are less durable than wood for blocking rocks, hail or other debris.  Many property owners are willing to overlook this because vinyl shutters improve your house’s appearance, are affordable and maintenance free.

Composite Shutters

These are less expensive shutters made of composite woods instead of solid woods.  The advantage of composite shutters is that they are resistant to termites and rot and will last a lifetime.  They are normally sold pre-stained and do not need maintenance, yet appear the same as real wood.  Composite Shutters are a good choice for anyone looking into maintenance free shutters.

Fiberglass shutters

Fiberglass is strong and built to last.  Fiberglass is an effective choice for exterior house shutters and has been used in places where the shutters are actually closed, such as parts of the world that are regularly hit by hurricanes.  Fiberglass shutters do not come cheap, but they are solid, maintenance free and built to last.  They are an ideal choice for anyone who lives in an area affected by hurricanes for the reason that they can put up with some abuse.

Aluminum shutters

Like vinyl shutters, aluminum shutters are a complement to aluminum siding and are a stylish choice for homeowners. While vinyl came into fashion a generation ago, knocking aluminum out of the running, aluminum shutters showed up again and are presently very popular with people who want stylish and maintenance free shutters that are built to last.

Whether you are looking at shutters for the exterior or interior of your home, you are likely to find many different maintenance free shutters for your home.  The kind of house shutters that you choose will depend upon finances as well as the primary reason for the shutters.  Wood House Shutters are engineered for everything from protecting your house from a hurricane to impressing the neighbors.  Find the ones that are right for circumstances.
